The worst trade in Celtics history draws perilously near

It’s almost complete
The worst trade in the history of the Boston Celtics is coming. Call it the anti Parish/Mchale for Joe Barry Carroll trade. Call it Hershell Walker part two. Call it whatever you want, except good for the Boston Celtics.
This is a disaster of epic proportions for the Boston Celtics and the smart fans should know it. Even if right now they’re having failed delusions of grandeur.
They know it because you don’t trade a 22-year-old big man stud for a 31-year-old of similar (and declining) skills. And we’re not even talking about the four other quality players and draft picks we sent along with him. Oh, plus that little matter of $7 million in cash that is the Garnett trade kicker, which the Celtics will have to pay to acquire him. Imagine that, the Celtics just agreed to pay a guy $7 million IN CASH, just to trade for him….A guy who has won two, just TWO, playoff series in his entire career.
A fool and his money Mr. Grousbeck are soon parted. If you’re so anxious to piss it away I have a list of charities that could use it.
Yes, the team will win more games in the short run, maybe even a ticket to the NBA Finals. Maybe, that is, unless Paul Pierce gets injured, or Ray Allen, or Kevin Garnett, because these folks are not spring chickens anymore.
Will they win the Finals? I doubt it. You don’t win a championship with a paper-thin bench. I’m sorry you don’t. And even if it does lead to a trip to the Finals what about all the hypocrite fans who bitched about the New York Yankees buying titles all those years. Oh wait a minute, they haven’t won any titles since they started playing roto-league baseball in the Bronx. And they won’t win any titles here in Boston playing it either.
Frankly, I’m surprised. For years, I have defended the moves of this braintrust. They made smart long term moves, building a portfolio of players long on potential, who would learn the game the right way — The Celtics way. It hasn’t worked out exactly as we planned, but sometimes investments take time to materialize—Big Al was one of those investments that paid off. But what did we do, we traded him away. Never mind Gerald Green, or Gomes, or Telfair – three guys who could develop into something very special. Remember they’re all under 24 years old.
This moves sickens me to my core. It’s the basketball equivalent of the AOL/Time Warner merger—good on paper but ultimately a failed endeavor that will leave all of us stockholders holding an empty bag of promises.
Shame on you Danny Ainge, and shame on you Wyc Grousbeck. You should ask yourself one question: Would Red have done this? And the answer is hell no.

What kind of logic did Danny Ainge use to justify trading 2-3 young All-Stars (Al Jefferson, plus 1-2 of the draft picks…especially if bundled to move up) and at least two decent players (Gomes and Green) for 1 old All-Star?
Why did we suffer through all those losses and learn to love these young players only to have it all flushed into the Harbor?
Why, why, why?
It’s the Boston Massacre 2.0.

Thanks bro…there was a bit of sarcasm in my comment but I still needed that…
I’m about to buy two half-season plans [22 tickets]…Kevin Garnett + Paul Pierce + Ray Allen will be fun to watch but we still gave up too much…oh well!

[…] Last night, when the Kevin Garnett trade broke, perksisabeast summed up my feelings in his post, The worst trade in Celtics history draws perilously near, perfectly. Then after reading Bill Simmons’ post, McHale adds another notch to his Celtics legacy, and being reminded [by perksisabeast] to always look on the bright side of life, I ended up buying a pair of half-season tickets [21 games] to the 2007-2008 Celtics season. All that over the course of 3-4 hours. […]

Gomes is over-rated, he can’t cover quick 3’s and gets pushed around by power 4’s. He’s a good guy and I hate to see him go, but its not a huge loss. Rondo, Tony and Perk are going to have a whole lot of fun this year! If you don’t think Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett aren’t going to be hungry, you’re crazy? Best of all The Beast will be playing off Garnett and will be up for a HUGE season. Like the Wallaces a couple years back only better.

I never said it wasn’t going to be fun for this year. But down the line, barring a championship, this will be a horrible trade for the Celtics. If one of these guys rolls an ankle in the first round of the playoffs we’re toast.

Yeah, but we’re still talking playoffs and thats a major improvement!

dude who are you? sound like some 30 year old that hates on his own team because he’s really mad that he still lives in his moms basement. Im a die hard c’s fan have been through the ups and downs and I love Geraldo and big al as much as the next person probably even more but like Big L says, “its time to make power moves to get the chedder” this was ainges plan all along he stockpiled for years so he could make a move and the timing with the weak eastern confrence is on point. C’s went from laughing stalks with “potential” to the talk of the nba in a matter of 3 months and im loving every second of it. so why dont you get up off your blog, find a girlfriend and get hyped for the c’s playoff run this year. damn they might even be on espn but please believe all true c’s fans are staying on that fsn steeez for that daily dose of tommy. and lets be serious.. possible poetential in 3 years or guaranteed and proven game and intensity for the next 4 years. seems like a no brainer to me.
ps telfair is a scrub and always will be.

An aging Garnett is better than a young..well.. almost anybody.
I can’t wait to see if this will be a disaster or a championship team. Exciting!

[…] Now, even if we believe we’d have won 50 games with the lineup as formally constituted before the trade, we think this is the moment the Celtics returned to the forefront of the sports world and reclaimed their place next to the New York (Expletive Deleted) as The Franchise by which all other sports teams are measured. Some of our dear reader(s) might be surprised at our anger at the trade, but they forget that we are first and foremost loyal. Al, you are a special talent to whom the Beast Lair will lift many glasses.
